Paint Correction in Suffolk County, NY

Paint correction is machine polishing that permanently removes swirl marks, oxidation and light scratches by levelling a few microns of clear coat. A single-stage polish typically removes 40 to 60 percent of visible defects; a multi-step correction removes 80 to 90 percent. Ninja Auto Detail performs correction at our Medford shop, standalone or as part of a ceramic coating package.

What paint correction actually is

Paint correction removes defects rather than filling them. A machine polisher levels the clear coat down to the base of each scratch until the scratch has nowhere left to be. What comes back is the paint itself, flat and reflective.

It is measured work. Clear coat is only 40 to 60 microns thick and correction consumes a few at a time, which is why a depth gauge belongs on the job. One stage removes roughly 40 to 60 percent of what you can see; multi-step gets to 80 or 90 and leaves the deep isolated scratches. It is also the foundation for everything else, because a coating locks in whatever is underneath it for years.

Who it’s for — and who it isn’t

Worth it if…

  • Swirl marks and wash haze that show in direct sun
  • Oxidation and faded, chalky paint on older cars
  • Any car about to receive a coating or PPF
  • Paint that looks dull rather than dirty after a wash

We’ll steer you elsewhere if…

  • Scratches you can catch a fingernail in. Polishing cannot bring back paint that is gone
  • Repainted panels of unknown thickness, or failing clear coat. We measure first
  • Anyone whose real complaint is that the car is dirty. A decontamination wash costs far less

Saying this costs us some jobs. That trade is deliberate.

How the job runs

  1. Paint Correction step 1 at Ninja Auto Detail

    Step 01 1–2 hrs

    Wash and decontamination

Iron removal and clay. Polishing over contamination drags it across the paint.

  2. Paint Correction step 2 at Ninja Auto Detail

    Step 02 20 min

    Paint depth readings

Sets the ceiling on how aggressive we can be, and finds repainted panels.

  3. Paint Correction step 3 at Ninja Auto Detail

    Step 03 20 min

    Inspection under proper lighting

Swirls are invisible under garage light. We map them with you.

  4. Paint Correction step 4 at Ninja Auto Detail

    Step 04 30 min

    Test spot

The pad and compound that works on one car damages another.

  5. Paint Correction step 5 at Ninja Auto Detail

    Step 05 3–6 hrs

    Cutting stage

The defect-removal pass. Where the 40–60% happens.

  6. Paint Correction step 6 at Ninja Auto Detail

    Step 06 3–5 hrs

    Refining stage (multi-step)

Removes the haze cutting leaves and takes it to 80–90%.

  7. Paint Correction step 7 at Ninja Auto Detail

    Step 07 45 min

    Panel wipe and inspection

Strips polishing oils so you see the real finish, not oils filling marks.

  8. Paint Correction step 8 at Ninja Auto Detail

    Step 08 Varies

    Protection

Corrected paint is bare. Sealant, or the coating you came for.

Which level does your paint need?

Look at the car in direct sunlight, or under a bright light at a gas station at night. That is when defects show. Match what you see to one of these, then send photos with your quote request.

Light

Paint looks good day to day. In direct sun you can see fine swirl webbing and some wash haze. No scratches you can feel.

We’d recommendSingle-Stage Enhancement Polish

One stage takes out most of what you are seeing. A multi-step here would remove clear coat for defects nobody notices.

Medium

Swirl marks visible under any bright light, not just direct sun. Some isolated scratches. Paint feels slightly rough after a wash.

We’d recommendMulti-Step Correction

Cutting then refining gets to 80–90%. This is also the right base if a ceramic coating is going on afterwards.

Severe

Dull or chalky. Heavy scratching, oxidation, or paint that has not been polished in many years. Some scratches catch a fingernail.

We’d recommendMulti-Step Correction, after an inspection

We measure paint depth before committing. Some of this is correctable and some of it is through the clear coat — we will tell you which is which before you pay.

What we use, and why

Paint depth gauge
Non-negotiable. The difference between correcting a car and thinning a panel.
Graduated abrasive system
Pad and compound pairs chosen by the test spot, not by habit.
Inspection lighting
Defects a shop cannot see are defects a shop cannot remove.

Durability and aftercare

Correction is permanent
The removed defects are gone for good. What comes back is new damage — from washing, from automatic tunnels, from road debris.
Protecting the result
This is the argument for coating immediately after. You have paid to make the paint perfect; a coating keeps it that way for years instead of months.
How to not undo it
No automatic washes with brushes. Two-bucket hand washing. Most people who come back with fresh swirls got them from a tunnel wash.

Paint Correction questions

How do I know which level I need?

Light haze visible only in direct sun is a single-stage job. Obvious swirl webbing under any bright light is multi-step. Use the self-assessment above, then send photos.

Is paint correction safe for my paint?

When it is measured, yes. Correction removes clear coat, which is finite, so it runs against depth-gauge readings and a test spot. Done without measurement it absolutely can damage a car.

Will it remove every scratch?

No. If your fingernail catches in it, it is through the clear coat. Expect 40–60% defect removal from one stage and 80–90% from multi-step.

Do I need correction before a ceramic coating?

If you want the coating to be worth what it costs, yes. A coating is optically clear and lasts years — it locks in whatever is underneath.

Why is there no price listed?

Correction is priced by paint condition and panel count. A number posted without seeing the car is one we would have to walk back. Send photos and we will give you a real one.
